TASTING

The colour is amber and remains deep despite its age. The nose is intense and precise, with notes of cocoa, blond tobacco and the noble aroma of walnuts so characteristic of these very old natural sweet wines. The palate is full-bodied, refined, sweet and sensual.

PERFECT MATCHES

This 55-year-old wine reveals surprising freshness and youthfulness. It pairs perfectly with blue cheeses such as Roquefort, or desserts made with chocolate and dried fruit. Open one hour before serving and serve at 15°C.

PARCELS, GRAPE VARIETIES & TERROIR

90% Grenache Noir, 5% Maccabeu, 5% Carignan
Decomposed schist and black marl, south-facing. Soil maintenance by ploughing. The Grenache vines, trained using the gobelet method, are over 40 years old. The average yield is 18 hl/ha with planting densities of 3,500 to 4,000 vines/ha.

VINIFICATION & MATURING

Fortification on the skins followed by 30 days of maceration to extract the substance contained in the berries and achieve a balanced structure between fruit, alcohol and sugar.
Aged for one year in glass demijohns placed outside, then in 350 hl oak casks. This ageing process is the true signature of Mas Amiel.

97/100

DECANTER
Millésime 1969

Velvet-textured and full of walnut, date and dried fig flavours. A harmonious wine, with dry woody and umami notes and a gentle rancio undercurrent. So concentrated and intense. Surprisingly structured, with chewy tannins and plentiful acidity and a long finish.

Millésime 1969

The oldest vintage-dated Maury still being sold by Mas Ariel, the 1969 Maury Vintage is sweet, silky and succulent, with smoky notes that are beginning to take over from the walnut flavors still at the core. It's medium to full-bodied, and while in no immediate danger of cracking up, I don't see it getting any better from here. Drink up.

19.5/20

JANCIS ROBINSON
Millésime 1969

Smells younger than the 99! Tea and figs and something incredible tangy. Coffee. But the astounding thing is the freshness. And the spice. And the complexity. And the texture. Oolong, dates, chocolate, salt and shimmer. I want to go to bed with this wine … If the 1999 was a sculpture, the 1969 is like a national museum, a massive colonnaded building broached by marble steps and filled with light and shadows, edifices and crannies, vaults and ringing corridors and dust and treasures. It is also a wine that deserves hours and hours, silent conversations, listening and contemplation.
