TASTING

Tiled colour with coffee highlights. The nose reveals intense notes of cocoa powder and fresh fig, accompanied by fresh notes of peppermint. The palate is surprising, both for its frank and powerful attack and its astonishing acidity for a wine of this age. Notes of fresh fig and walnut assert themselves in a perfect balance between alcohol, sugar and acidity.

PERFECT MATCHES

The 1980 vintage reveals surprising freshness and youthfulness. It pairs perfectly with blue cheeses such as Roquefort, or desserts made with chocolate and dried fruit. Open one hour before serving and serve at 15°C.

PARCELS, GRAPE VARIETIES & TERROIR

90% Grenache Noir, 5% Maccabeu, 5% Carignan
Decomposed schist and black marl, south-facing. Soil maintenance by ploughing. The Grenache vines, trained using the gobelet method, are over 40 years old. The average yield is 18 hl/ha with planting densities of 3,500 to 4,000 vines/ha.

VINIFICATION & MATURING

Fortification on the skins followed by 30 days of maceration to extract the substance contained in the berries and achieve a balanced structure between fruit, alcohol and sugar.
Aged for one year in glass demijohns placed outside, then in 350 hl oak casks. This ageing process is the true signature of Mas Amiel.

Millésime 1980

The two oxidative ones reign supreme, with a 1980 of cold tobacco, dark chocolate and orange peel, which leaves its mark on the palate.

JANCIS ROBINSON
Millésime 1980

Pale garnet colour. Reminiscent of great old sherry with that acetone character. Then it's more like tawny port on the palate – dried fig and milk chocolate, still some primary fruit to give freshness and plenty of persistence. This will last indefinitely but is beautiful to drink now, and such an underrated style.

Millésime 1980

The seductive 1980 Maury Vintage features walnut-aged aromas but also plentiful cherry fruit, even after nearly 40 years of aging. It's fresher and more vibrant than the NV 40 Ans, if perhaps a touch less complex. Medium to full-bodied, it finishes silky and long.
